At 10:07 a.m. on April 4th, 2006, Jerry was relieved of his suffering. Surrounded by his family, he died peacefully at the Solace hospice facility. Jerry's strength, his humor and his infectious joy touched so many of us. In one of his final e-mails, he said "I'm going to miss my greatest blessing here - my friends. You have all been a blessing to me." You were the blessing Jerry. We'll carry your spirit as we paddle clear creeks, while biking down country roads and we'll "look for rainbows EVERYWHERE".

 

An extreme kaya and road bike race to benefits ALS research and the Green River Access Fund

The kayaking leg will consist of 4 miles of Green River whitewater starting at Big Hungry Creek, including the Class V "Narrows Section," and ending at the Wildness Cove bridge. The kayakers will start in one minute increments beginning at 11:00noon. There will only be 120 kayak start times for either team or solo participants, and the race will be closed as soon as this cap is reached. The bike leg will be a 26-mile loop up the Green River Cove climb, around downtown Saluda, down Holbert Cove, and back to the Wildeness Cove bridge.  There will be only one time split between events as bikers exit the transition area.  

Kayakers

  • Team-kayakers begin the race at 11:00am from Big Hungry Creek
  • Boaters will be released at one minute intervals
  • Your race number is your start time. Call out your number to volunteers recording times.
  • There will be volunteers above Gorilla and Sunshine warning if it is safe to proceed.
  • If you do not STOP for an orange waving flag, your times will be marked DNF (Did Not Finish).

Road Bikers

  • Team-Bikers start when Team Kayaker arrives at Wilderness Cove bridge.
  • START from Wilderness Cove bridge towards climb up Green River Cove Rd
  • RIGHT at stop sign (under I-26 towards Saluda )
  • RIGHT on Howard Gap Rd at Texaco.
  • LEFT on Esseola St (becomes Henderson St )
  • RIGHT on Carolina St
  • LEFT on Hwy 176 through downtown Saluda
  • LEFT on Ozone Dr back towards I-26
  • After I-26, stay straight on Holbert Cove Rd
  • LEFT on Silver Creek Rd
  • LEFT on Green River Cove Rd
  • END at Wilderness Cove bridge
